The summer vacation is an annual ritual in most of the world. Getting up and going is just what we do. That being said, trips this year and in the future may be much shorter. Why? Things are getting expensive and will continue to do so.

So, is the increase in travel expenses just a temporary event or permanent? Well, the future appears to be a mixed bag. Fuel prices probably are never going to drop much. The dollar, hopefully, will rebound at some point and that will definitely help.

So, are there any ways we can deal with the increased cost of traveling? There are always little things you can do and, in this case, some big ones as well. The key in many cases is to think beyond the normal travel strategies.

If you travel abroad, you already know what you biggest expense is. Flying from here to there takes a lot of fuel and airlines are under a lot of pressure. Flights are going to become more expensive, so we need strategies to deal with them.

The first strategy is pretty well known. You should fly during the off season to your destination. The prices between high and low seasons are dramatically different. Flying to Paris in July is going to be expensive unless you think out of the box.

What kind of out of the box thinking should you be doing? If you have to fly during high season, try to find a charter flight. These are airlines that only work during part of the year. The flight comes with no frills, but it is often much cheaper than regular airlines.

Yet another out of the box strategy is to become a courier. Specifically, an air courier. Yes, they really exist. You agree to carry documents in exchange for help with the ticket. Free tickets are rare, but you can save 70 percent or so easily.

One you are on the ground at your destination, there are other strategies you can impliment to save some travel bucks. Where you decide to stay is often the biggest expense. Dropping from a hotel to hostel can dramatically cut your costs.

Another great way to save money on accommodations is to hit the train station. Most have a booth where locals rent out a room in their house to you. This can also be a good way to meet the locals and get a taste for the real life in the area.

This list could actually go on and on. Traveling does not have to be that expensive, even now. Take the time to review your situation and see where you can cut corners on your cost.
