A Winning Strategy To Better Putting
There are some keys to success when you are on the putting green, and we are going to go over those. When out on the course playing golf and you want to make more putts, you must keep your putting system and your routine as simple as possible. If you ever watch what the pro’s do on TV when they are putting, you should notice that putting is the part of the game that is totally a personal thing. This is really the way that it should be.
There is really no right or wrong way on how to setup or stand over the ball. Then you have to try to keep all of the precise and mechanical thoughts out of the way. You want to think of the pace you want the ball to roll and how far right or left of the hole the ball should travel.
You want to think of it this way; the object is to see how close you can come to the hole each time. One of the nice things about this is that, if the ball goes in, it is a bonus. If you have watched the sport over the years, you know that there have been very successful putters, with very radical styles.
These facts are telling you that it is OK to be yourself and do what is comfortable for you.
Want to be a better putter? These putting tips will help you do that.
1.) You need to be relaxed and comfortable before you putt. If your body is tense and your arms are as stiff as boards and don’t forget all the other tensing up things that are done prior to hitting the ball, your success rate is not going to be very good. Stay relaxed
2.) Your number one goal on any putt you hit is to hit the ball in the middle of the putter face. You know when you do this. You can hear and feel when it happen. So, making more putts is as simple as striking the ball in the middle of the putter face.
The pro’s will tell you that most putts that are missed, whether they are short or right/left of the hole was due to the fact that the ball was not struck in the middle of the putter face. Not because you chose the wrong line to putt the ball on or the wrong speed for that line. Not at all. So, hit the ball in the middle of the putter and make more putts.
3.) Try not to change your putting stroke to often, just try to hit the ball solidly each time.
4.) Be as consistent as you can with you tempo. This is a main key. Your back and through stroke. My stroke is going to be different than yours. Mine may be slow and yours may be fast or it could be in between fast and slow. Try to keep is as consistent as you can. The more consistent you make this the more consistent your ball is going to roll and the more putts you are going to make.
5.) Try not to get to anxious and see what the ball is doing, stay down and through the putt. Don’t PEEK. Chances are if you PEEKED, you probably watched another putt miss the cup. This is another reason putts miss, is because you get quick picking your head up.
What happens when you look up to soon is that you are not going to hit the ball where you want to in relation to the putter face. As mentioned earlier, you must hit the ball in the middle of the putter face. It is very natural for you to want to see where the ball is going. It is very common and even in the pro’s. They just do it less than we do. Try this to help you to keep your head down longer. After you hit the ball, count to one. This will ensure that your head does not come up early.
Try watching Anika and Tiger. They are good examples of great putting and keeping your head down. They can have a 10ft. putt and they will barely see the ball going in the hole. This is really your clue to what you need to be doing, which is keeping your head down. When you start to keep your head down longer your other body parts are going to do the same thing and stay down and through the putt longer. You will start to make more putts for sure.
By following these guidelines and remember that the object is to see how close you can get the ball to the hole, and you should see improvement in your putting.
