What Are The Major Golf Tournaments?
It is essential to learn about the big players and the big events in any sport if you want to really get to grips with the sport. After all, where better to view what you should be doing than by watching the best in the business? Let’s take a look at the biggest golf tournaments that you should be tuning into:
The US PGA Tour is a collection of games that take place all over America. They last for most of the year and have a wide range of prizes and participants. There are qualifying events which allow you to play in the tour the next year and the actual matches take place throughout the year with major events distributed throughout the year.
With a prize pool of a cool $7,000,000 then the PGA Championship is one golfing event you definitely want to take part in. In 2007 Tiger Woods won $1.26 million from this event alone. It is one of the major four tournaments and plays in August time usually to finish the year off while the weather is still nice.
The Open Championship, The Masters, and U.S. Open are three additional major contests that are a part of the PGA Tour. Each competition is unique as far as credentials, playing settings, and rewards. Let’s discuss each in turn:
One odd major championship is the Masters. All the others rotate their courses around, but the Masters vehemently refuses to and has been played on the same course (Augusta National Golf Club) since 1934! I guess if it isn’t broken don’t try and fix it.
One of the most highly sought after prizes in golf (aside from the money is the distinctive green jacket that the winner of the Masters gets to wear. It is the official jacket of the club which the winner is then an honorary member of. They are supposed to give the jacket back after one year so that the club can hold onto it ready for when they play there next, but in 1962 Gary Player liked his so much he decided not to return it!
The U.S. Open is organized in June and allows both amateurs and experts. Participants must have a handicap index of 1.4 or less. Varied host golf courses are decided on each year for the U.S. Open in the United States. This is one competition where either male or female golfers may be accepted into the tournament.
Here is my favourite, the British Open, the only major held in the UK. Started in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club it is now rotated between English and Scottish courses each year. A small handful of players have won this event more than once, Tiger Woods is up there with 3 wins alongside Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, but Harry Vardon annihilates them with 6 total wins with his last win in 1914.
