The Benefits of the Classical Education Method

When parents first start exploring the classical education method, they often worry that the curriculum will be too much for their children to handle. Since challenging curriculum and discipline are indeed part of the classical education method, this is a legitimate concern.

But that doesn’t mean education has to be dry and boring. In fact, the classical education method reinforces the concept of students being encouraged to do what they find most natural and enjoyable at each phase in life.

Children in the first stage, for example, are good at memorization. They love reciting rhymes and songs. In fact they love it so much that they often invent their own songs. Using the classical education method, you can concentrate on this natural inclination by focusing on concrete learning.

If you’ve ever had a child in junior high, you must certainly know that children in this stage are more quick to question things and argue. The classical education method plays to this stage with logic and reasoning.

In this phase, children need to learn how to argue based on the facts that they learned in the grammar phase.

Once the child is in the third and final stage (high school years), interests start expanding beyond the internal and dwelling on external concerns.

At this time in life, teenagers start to become very concerned about how others perceive them. It is in the rhetoric stage that children are instructed n how to share thoughts and ideas in a clear, easy to understand way.

With the classical education method, children can truly feel successful. Children are held to objective standards when taught with the classical education method, which gives them a better understanding of what they can do and what they cannot do. This method gives a clear, accurate picture of their abilities.

Hard work, learning, and fun can be successfully mixed together. Learning should be fun and challenging in all stages. When children are able to learn using methods that accommodate their natural development, learning becomes fun.

Children can be excited by learning. Children learn to better appreciate education with the classical education method, and it encourages them to pursue even more knowledge on their own.
