The Procrastination Cure
Procrastination seems like a good idea at first because you get to avoid something that you do not want to do. Unfortunately it still has to be done so it just comes back to haunt you later. The real danger with procrastination comes when it becomes a habit and creates a constant mounting pile of work that needs your attention. The stress you experience will outweigh any relief you felt by putting off the task in the first place and your missed deadlines and slack performance will mark you unreliable. In order to achieve success at home and in life, you must learn to overcome procrastination. Following are some tips that may help.
Part of the reason you procrastinate is you are so worried about how perfect the project has to be that you can’t bring yourself to start. You fear rejection or harsh judgment. Accept the fact that an incomplete project or late project will be more criticized than anything you actually worked on and gave your full attention. If something needs to be done, just get started and do it.
Attitude plays a big role in how your approach a project. If you say you hate it or dread it, you are going to be stuck in that negative place where no ideas will come to you and you will continue to hate it and dread it. Attach something positive to the start of a tough project so that you will actually look forward to it rather than dreading it. Before you go to bed the night before, psych yourself up by thinking about the venti mocha cappuccino you are going to splurge on before work and enjoy while working on your project. Give yourself something to look forward to and offset the dread.
Clean up your area. A clear, tidy workspace will block out distraction and improve focus. The result will be increased productivity and efficiency.
Don’t waste time. It is important to check email and research the internet for our projects, but those things can easily side track you and rob you of hours of work time before you know it. Schedule these tasks throughout the day and stick with the routine to ensure the maximum potential for your precious time.
Divide large products into a series of smaller ones that do not promote dread and worry. Your attitude will be improved and your total project will be completed faster.
Work with a buddy to keep one another focused and motivated. You are less likely to get into a rut and you will both be more productive and happy.
The urge to procrastinate will never completely go away, but if you understand its origin and know how to fight it, you will experience increased productivity and success.
