Give the Guy his Sports Room

I’ve been married for awhile and my husband has always wanted a sports themed room. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised - after all our first date was watching a softball game. And that was just the start. He is a bonafide fanatic for football, baseball, basketball and golf. I’m sure there are even more sports I’m overlooking right now.

As in most homes, space always seems to be limited, especially in a home with children. We happen to be blessed with two girls. Every house we’ve lived in has had that one extra room, but that room always seems to become the “toy room” instead of the dreamed of “sports room”. And with two girls, our toy room is stuffed with dolls and mini-kitchen sets which is about as far away from sports as you can get. As the girls get older, they are catching the sports bug, but not enough to let their dad take over their toy room with his baseball cards.

But I know my hubby secretly imagines taking over that room. He’ll assume that the kids will tire of toys (don’t they just replace them with bigger toys?). He’ll dream of the day when the girls leave us for college and then he’ll take it over. His biggest loves are baseball and football so both sports would have to be accommodated in the decor. And of course there needs to be a huge flat screen TV for him and his buddies.

In the meantime, our attic and bookcases are slowly filling up with items my husband calls “collectibles” that simply cannot be discarded. After all, what will we put in his sports room once it becomes his?

I’m not the only one with a sports nut for a husband I know. My good friend Sarah has a sports loving husband also. They didn’t have a spare bedroom for his stuff either but Sarah did at least decorate the guest bathroom with a golf theme. Now that doesn’t really meet his needs but it looks pretty cool and it at least gives him hope he’ll get his bigger room someday.

So I have learned a little something from my friend. Maybe if I give my husband a small corner to decorate as he pleases now, I can turn that toy room into my dreamed of “craft room”!
