Customizing Exercise for Women
Sometimes the urge comes on a girl to get out there and get in shape. But when that happens, the reasons women put themselves through the work of working out are always different from why men do it. But if your motivations for working out are combined with a well designed work out program, you will stick with the program long enough to see results. And when you go into a program knowing exactly what you want, you will know when it’s working and when it isn’t and make the proper adjustments rather than just give up.
Most of the time work outs that are built for the male body and preferences are dominated by weight training and getting “pumped up”. That is because the male body responds positively to such training and the results guys see from such works out are good for the much talked about male ego.
So it’s natural that women’s exercise programs are focused on other motivations for getting in shape. And if you ask all the women at the gym what is the big motivation, it usually is the desire to lose a few pounds. That is why a woman’s workout must include a mixture of exercises which includes some cardio work outs combined with weight room exercises that are specifically focused on stretching and toning the tummy.
But the majority of the emphasis in a weight loss program will be on cardio workouts which will include jogging, walking, swimming and active sports such as tennis. These exercises should be used in a healthy balance with weight and stretching programs so as to see real progress.
The purpose of adding stretching and weight training to a good program of cardio exercises and diet control is that we want to replace the fat we lose with healthy muscle. But something more is needed than even a perfectly balanced program of exercise and diet that accomplishes your physical goals. And that thing that has to be part of any ongoing program that is going to work long term is that the time you spend working out must be enjoyable.
So any women’s exercise programs you will commit to must also have some sense of fun and probably be social to really work for you. Unlike men, women are social creatures and if you have a work out with a friend or belong to an all women’s gym, the chances your program will be a success are much higher. In addition to the company, breaking up your program by being involved in a greater variety of exercises will also keep you going to the gym consistently week after week.
If one week you focus on jogging, another on tennis, then a week of swimming and then some volleyball or racquetball and you mix that up with weight training and time on the stair steppers or treadmill, you can keep a good variety to your program and keep yourself active in your quest for a slimmer healthier you.
By making the investment of some planning and thinking about how to put together an exercise program that woks for you, you will see your weight come down, your stamina go up and your overall health and quality of life improve. Before long exercise won’t just be a program but a way a life you cannot imagine going without and you will be a healthy and happy girl in every aspect of life. And that is worth the effort of getting your program working today for a better tomorrow.
