Discover What Kind of Water Damage Is Covered Under Your Policy

It happens far too often. A flood ruins a home and the possessions in it, and the family doesn’t even realize that their homeowners insurance won’t cover it. Do you want this to happen to you? Of course not, no one does. Unfortunately, however, most people don’t know what their policy will or will not cover.

Living where I do, there have not been any flooding in our area to produce problems in our home, but we did have water in our basement a few months ago. Fortunately, it didn’t ruin anything, so we didn’t need to claim anything, but I know that it is always possible that water damage could cause some loss. If I don’t have a good enough insurance policy, I will be in a deep pit.

Have you ever damaged something in your home, or experienced something not working that you have a warranty on? For example, let’s say that your satellite television box went out, but you don’t know why. You call up the satellite company and they tell you it will cost you $100 to fix it. You probably thought that it wouldn’t cost you anything, but because you didn’t have the insurance on it, it wasn’t covered. It is much the same with water damage and homeowners insurance policies.

Let’s take a look at a few examples of what might happen to your home with water.

If you have ever experienced water damage due to flooding, you know that it can create a big mess and in some cases a big loss. Not only did you possibly lose possessions, but you probably also had to have some repairs done on your house. Your carpet may needed to have been removed, walls redone, etc. If you only have a simple insurance policy, none of this would be covered.

The government can help you in getting flood insurance if you think you may need it. It is highly recommended for homes that are on a known flood plain. Of course the solution would be to move to an area that isn’t in a flood zone, but that just isn’t always necessary. Take advantage of it so you don’t end up in a world of problems later.

Have you ever had water damage due to a faucet being left on? If you have children, chances are, you have. They can easily forget to turn water off, and if they don’t tell you about it, a bathroom can flood very quickly causing an immense amount of damage. I never thought this type of accident would be covered by a simple insurance policy, but much to my surprise, it is.

If you think about it, leaving a faucet on is really your mistake, and why should an insurance company pay for that? That is the crazy thing about insurance policies. I will never fully understand why they do the things they do. I can only know what is covered and what isn’t.

Water damage is not anything we want to deal with, but sometimes it is something we simply can’t help. Fortunately, depending on the policy you have, there is coverage. It is worth taking time to figure out what kind of coverage you need in case of an emergency.
