This is the second article in the “Affiliate Marketing News” series, describing step #2 on your way to successful affiliate marketing. In the first step I gave you some ideas on how to find the right products to promote. The second step is keyword research.

You have probably already heard of what they call “long tail keywords.” These are phrases of at least 3 words or even more. Let me give you a simple example, which will make it very clear.

Let’s assume you know a lot about sewing and you found a real cool sewing patterns product to promote. Go to Google and search for “sewing patterns.” You will get over 1,300,000 results! There is no way for a complete newbie to compete against so many sites. Now try to search for the exact phrase “sewing patterns online” and you will get only 10,600 results. If you learn the next steps of my plan, you’ll know that it is not hard to dominate this niche.

I recently purchased a tool that shows how many web sites are optimized for any key word. Let me tell you that out of these 10,600 sites just 4 (four!) are optimized for “sewing patterns online.” The downside is that the same great tool shows me that “sewing patterns” receives 176,000 searches a month, while “sewing patterns online” gets only 4,500 monthly searches.

But, and there is a but, 4,500 searches combined with another log tail keyword such as “sewing patterns costumes,” that has over 2,000 monthly searches and zero optimized web sites, brings your total to almost 7,000 searches a month - a very nice search volume. And when you read my following articles, you will learn how to take advantage of these data and start using the search engines for your promotions.

Keywords research is the single most important step on your way to success. It is the spinal column of marketing on the Internet. You can find a lot of help online: various tools and other resources that will make your research much easier.

You should always begin with the broadest term: “gardening,” “credit,” “weight loss,” “cars,” and you go from there to the long tail keyword: “online gardening tools,” “fast weight loss programs,” etc. Keep checking your findings on all the search engines and watch the results, finally you will discover 3-4 phrases of 3-5 words which are the least competitive and still have some search volume.

As I said, keywords research is the main step in our plan to reach success affiliate marketing. It would be wise if you invest your utmost in this stage. You can find many helpful resources online, free or relatively cheap, which will save you time and efforts.
