Playing a Tight Poker Game
If a person wishes to consistently win at a poker table they must poses some skill and master the art of deception. A player who masters both of these will even be able to lose some hands and still come out ahead in the end.
No matter what type of poker you are playing you will never run into two poker games where all the players play the same way. One type of game you may come across is one where the pot size never grows large and not many players play in each pot this would be a tight poker game.
A tight poker game basically means that whoever wins most of the hands still will not walk away with all that much money. Does this mean that if you run into a game like this that you shouldn’t play it? Of Course not. Any money that can be won should be fought tooth and nail for.
When playing a tight poker game players are going to see that there is a lot of checking, smooth calling, and not much in the way of big raises. Players usually play this way so that they can draw to a nice hand at when the showdown comes they will have the top hand. If a player notices that all other players at a table are playing this way the player should come out raising more often then they normally would.
In a live game a player has no idea what the conditions at the table are like until he or she sits down. If the player does not like the feel or flow of the game at this table they can request to be moved to another table. Depending on the size of the poker room this could take awhile.
When sitting at a live poker game and each hand is being raise on a regular basis feel free to stay seated as long as you have the bankroll and skills to be able to beat this kind of game. If you are more suited to a tight style of poker go ahead and ask to change tables.
At an online poker room a tight poker player has a good advantage here. Before even sitting at a table a player can pull up such stats as the pot size on average, and the percentage of players in each hand. This is a very good advantage for the tight type of poker player.
With how popular poker has become finding a tight poker game is hard to do. Most new players are far to willing to gamble and not learn the skill of the game. All new players want a piece of every action at the poker table.
If a player does not use a tight poker strategy they will find themselves chasing hands that have virtually no chance of winning. They may win once in a great while but over the long run they will lose the majority of hands. A tight player will only be playing hands where they have a larger chance of winning so in the long run this player will win more often then not.
Unfortunately poker is till gambling and has some chance involved with it. In some cases the loose player will get lucky and win, but take for instance tournament style play. You will hardly if ever see this type of player at a final table. Smart, tight, and aggressive players are usually the type of players that will be seen at a final table of a poker tournament.
