Today there are both pros and cons to starting a home based business. There are some people who just don’t do well with the risk of a home based business as well as the isolation that can occur. However, those who are looking for another income or others who happen to be moms who need to stay at home with their children find that it can be a great opportunity. Those who want to take advantage of all the benefits these home businesses can offer can find a great home business in gift baskets.

Gift baskets are now a billion dollar business. Thousands have made a good income from their creativity and drive. Corporate marketing departments often look for things to provide customers on special occasions. Everyone is looking for that unique item that will please a friend or family member.

But what do you need to get started? First, as with all things, a little knowledge is required.

Basically, gift baskets are interestingly packaged containers full of - you guessed it - gifts. Any small items can be used to fill a gift basket - bath accessories, jewelry, stuffed toys, food or wine, to name but a few of the hundreds of things that can be used. Some other matters, however, should be kept in mind before launching a gift basket home-based business.

The gift basket business depends very heavily on individual creativity. Lots of people are bursting with that touch of artistic genius. Some struggle in vain to come up with new and interesting ideas. Most people are somewhere in between. Since, unless you start with a partner, you probably won’t be in a position to hire help at first, make sure you have the creative ability to produce desirable products.

But having a home-based business that specializes in gift baskets requires more than artistic flair. It demands some hard-headed practical skills as well. Marketing is one of the key abilities that often makes the difference between success and failure. You can have the best product in the world, but if no one knows about it then it will just sit on the shelf.

Of course you definitely could use some accounting skills, although today there are great software options that are easy for you to use and very inexpensive as well. However, you need to make sure that you discipline yourself to use this software as well. It is important that you track your costs, your inventory, the expenses of the business, and the sales you make as well. While it is a bit more complicated than just taking care of a checkbook, it is not that difficult, but you may want to get some help if you’re having difficulties.

Some computer skills can be a business-saver these days. Most of the marketing and advertising you do will be on the internet. Some locally distributed flyers, word of mouth around town, even radio spots can help. But, for most, doing business over the internet will be the dominant mode, at least at first. Make sure you have or can afford to hire the skills needed to create and maintain a good website.

You will also need to spend some time researching the competition as well before you start your own gift basket home based business. You will want to make sure that you come up with reasonable prices for your gift baskets. Even if you offer creative and wonderful gift baskets, you don’t want to price them so high that people don’t purchase them. So, make sure you research pricing and come up with competitive prices that will make your gift baskets sell.
