How To Grow An Indoor Herb Garden
You will find that there is a large overlap in herbs that are able to thrive in an indoor herb garden and herbs that grow well outdoors. Although a large number will do well both inside and outside, there are few differences when learning how to grow herbs indoors. Containers rapidly dry out so it is necessary to remember to give plants the moisture they require.
Herbs are the easiest plant to take care of. If they are kept on the appropriate soil then without any attention they grow very well even in land where other plants won’t grow. The require little attention other than adequate water and to be put in a place where enough light is available.
Are there herbs that are better when learning how to grow herbs indoors?
Because Bay Laurel is an herb native to the Mediterranean it enjoys a lot of sunshine along with dry conditions. It can be planted both inside and in an indoor herb garden. If you would like to grow Bay Laurel in a pot you will need to make sure it has sufficient drainage. Remember to put it in spot that gets plenty of sunshine if you have it placed in or near the house. To plant it in a pot you should use pre-moistened potting soil and a pot that allows the roots to grow. A pot that is not large enough will cause the herb to become root bound. You should place it where the sun will shine on it at least 6 hours per day. It will take about a year until it outgrows the container.
Chives thrive in pots, but the garden is where they truly excel. They will soak up heat and then sprout up to one foot or more, putting out lovely purple flowers. They do quite well bunched together and will last years, wintering just fine in colder climates. Clip their leaves near the base rather than farther up.
If you want to grow an indoor herb, parsley should be your choice. When planted outside, parsley might last one season. But it will last much longer, many years in fact, if grown in a pot. Keep in mind that you have an easier time growing from leaves. All you have to do is trim the outer leaves since the new ones grow from the center. Just remember that parsley loves a sunny spot. Keep it on a window facing south, assuming you live in the Northern Hemisphere obviously, and watch your plant thrive.
Lavender is great for making homemade potpourri or a perfume sachet. Be sure to leave it outside until you are actually going to start a project like this. The plant serves as functional ground cover with the aesthetics of beautiful pinkish-purple flowers in addition to producing a wonderful aroma.
Many herbs flourish inside or out, whether in a basket or planter. Just be sure they’re not over-watered; a combination of clay and granular loam in the soil will work great. When learning how to grow herbs indoors, don’t forget that these charming herbs make great seasonings too!
