US Visitors: Summer time Driving Tips

-->
by Suchi V

US visitors get ready for short and long driving trips this summer in United State of America. They are a great way to get away and have a fun summer. Follow some basic tips to keep you safe and comfortable on your trip.

1. It is important to have the manufacturer recommended tire pressure in your tires. You can find the recommended amount in the doorjamb on the driver’s side. Correct tire pressure ensures proper contact between the tire and the road. Tires loose air pressure every month, so check them often. It is also the easiest way to improve your car’s fuel economy.

2. Make sure you do an oil change before you start your trip. Check your owner’s manual to see what oil is recommended in each weather condition. Summer weather may need a thicker type of oil. Also make sure the coolant/antifreeze ratio is 50-to-50.

3. All fluids must be topped off and belts and hoses must be checked. The life span of batteries is usually 3-5 years. Extreme weather can strain the battery so it is best to get it tested.

4. Auto Club memberships can be very helpful during such trips. They can assist with tire changes, locked doors, towing etc. Take your membership card with you. If you have a newer car check with your dealer if road side assistance is included from the manufacturer.

5. Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle. Stock it with basic tools you may need, food, water, food supplies and a first aid kit. You can buy pre assembled kits in an auto store.

6. Pack a small cooler with bottled water, crackers, cereal bars, fruit, milk etc., to keep you and your family hydrated and hunger-free. Refill your cooler at gas stations and rest stops so you will always have food available. Sodas and salty snacks can make you more thirsty.

7. Drive safely and observe all the rules. Take a break if you are sleepy or tired. Seat belts can save your life. Fasten seatbelts and use car seats for your children.

Make sure your medical insurance travels with you. Have a great summer!
