Formal and Informal Flatware: An Enduring Gift

-->
by Robert Cooksey

When you purchase high quality flatware as a wedding, anniversary or housewarming present, you are giving a gift that will last a lifetime. This is true whether you buy the best stainless steel, sterling silver or silver plated flatware.

The difference between high quality and low quality flatware is in how and of what it is made. The best is attractive and durable. Food that is eaten off of high quality flatware actually has a more pleasant flavor. This is true whether the food is gourmet or off the grocery store shelves. Two sets of flatware should be owned by every family:

Informal Flatware

Stainless steel is usually used as the everyday eating utensils. When stainless steel is of the best quality, it is heavy, the tines on the forks are rounded and the knives contain high levels of carbon to keep the blades sharp. The best stainless steel flatware will have a pleasant feel to it. Quality blades will not be serrated because there will not be a need for it.

Flatware Used for Special Occasions

The best flatware is made of sterling silver. When it is of the highest quality, it is an attractive, sparkling addition to the table setting. This is meant to be used when there is a special occasion such as a holiday, birthday, anniversary or other day when guests are invited to dinner. This kind of flatware must be washed and dried with a soft cloth after every meal. It should be polished whenever it begins to appear dull.

Silver-plated flatware is a beautiful alternative to sterling silver. It is not quite as valuable but still, it does have value and is slightly less expensive than sterling silver. When something is silver-plated, it means a coat of silver has been thinly placed on an object. If your budget does not allow for sterling silverware, this might be your logical choice.

Formal flatware is meant to be used with a great set of crystal glasses, china dishes and cloth napkins. If the right flatware is missing, the table simply will not come together properly. Elegant dinners are always served with good flatware. If you want to give a great gift, give a set of formal flatware.

If someone you are close to is getting married, be sure to check their gift registry for their choice of flatware. Other occasions for giving flatware include birthdays, graduations and holidays. A great set of sterling silver is often given on a couple’s silver wedding anniversary. Not only are these occasions great opportunities for giving formal flatware, but they are also the perfect occasions for using it.

Let’s face it: Without a nice set of flatware, a table that is dressed up never quite appears finished. The best table setting includes quality formal flatware. With so many types and designs to choose from, it is a wise idea to talk to someone who has knowledge of flatware before you buy it as a gift. A family friend who is known for their hosting ability is the perfect person with which to talk if you have questions about flatware. Choose wisely and you will help to create timeless memories for generations to come.
