Searching for Your Roots
No daughter ever loved her dad and mom more than Ashley loved her adopted parents. Yet Ashley was still haunted by questions about where she came from, and the people who had biologically created her. She had spent years searching for information on them, but all she knew for certain was her biological mother’s address and location at the time Ashley was born.
The adoption agency that her adoptive parents went through was unwilling to provide her with any other information. She searched and searched the internet and the name of her mother. She couldn’t find any information anywhere. She had started to think that perhaps she would never find out who her birth parents were. She had so many questions to ask them.
Ashley wondered which of her birth parents she most closely resembled. She wondered why they had found it necessary to surrender her for adoption. But most of all, she wanted to let them know that she was well, happy, and had very grateful for the chance to have a wonderful life with her adoptive mom and dad.
She just couldn’t get over the need to talk to them, to see them, to at least know that they were alive and where they were. Haley gave up for a while because she was out of resources and out of leads. However, upon another trip to the adoption agency, she found that there was a new girl working.
But the new staff member seemed to be as tight-lipped as her predecessor, and before Haley had even finished her first question about locating her birth parents, the woman interrupted her and said that the adoption agency was legally prevented from revealing their identity.
Then, to Haley’s surprise, the woman leaned closer to Haley and said, “I was adopted too. I can’t give you any information about your birth parents, but I can give you the URL to a website that helped me out a lot.” Then, the woman wrote a website down on a sheet of paper and handed it to Haley.
Back at home, Haley went to a reverse records website and saw that there was a space for a name. She thought for a moment about the woman at the adoption agency and she typed in her biological mother’s name.
After taking time to gather her thoughts, Ashley nervously dialed the telephone number. She heard a woman’s voice at the other end, and hesitantly said, “Hello, I’m Ashley and I’m and adoptee searching for my birth parents. Your name is the same as my birth mom’s and I wondered if you surrendered your baby girl for adoption twenty-eight years ago.”
Ashley heard only silence for seconds, but the woman didn’t hang up, and then she quietly began sobbing. Ashley knew her struggle had at last borne fruit, and that she actually was speaking with the woman who had brought her into the world. Today Ashley not only knows and loves her birth mother, but has the joy of an extended family of half-brothers and sisters.
Although Ashley has still not been able to meet her biological father, they speak on the phone from time to time. And Ashley will never forget the adoption agency employee who gave her the URL of that website.
