Companies that provide space and bandwidth for a domain with one or more web sites through an internet connected server are called Web Hosts. Major companies can host domains on their own equipment and IP address range, as allowed by their private networks. But for most of those who want an internet existence, a ‘rented’ web host is essential.

You can choose from several different hosting plans. You can locate free ones, and others that charge upwards of $100 per month. Minimal bandwidth and small disk space is offered by some. For everything else the web site owner is responsible. The range of services may include server administration, backups, web design help, and troubleshooting among others.

Web hosting services may involve sharing a single server with multiple other users, even thousands or more. This arrangement is efficient and spares hosting companies unnecessary costs. The arrangement works fine because many web sites are simple and low volume. Considering a dedicated server may be helpful when you or one or more of the others grow.

A dedicated server will only host your domain. You can keep as many websites as you wish. You have control over all access. And, as an option, you may want to designate yourself as service administrator. You might save money, but you will have to spend a lot of your time on it. You need to know what you are doing or you will end up costing yourself much more than you save.

It’s desirable to have some technical knowledge under your belt in order to carry out those administrative functions yourself, even if you hire assistance. That knowledge will be useful for day-to-day tasks as well as for dealing with emergencies. You should be familiar with common areas like FTP, email administration, backup methods and other technical areas.

Implementing a database is worthwhile when your web site grows in size and complexity. Higher technical, logistical and /or creative abilities will be required.

Database application is comparatively simple. Some careful thinking is necessary to attain your desired design with good performance and simple maintenance. Graphic design, content creation and development, and many other tasks require considerable skill and time; many people do not have the patients for this work.

More low level administrative matters are also necessary. Utilitarian tasks such as managing disk space, maintaining domain names, registration and changes deals, are very tedious ones. It is helpful to have a rudimentary understanding of the workings of DNS with knowledge of the Internet’s design. That provides an understanding to the purpose of some of those tasks.

Consider all factors and look closely, when looking for a web host for your web site. Think about your personality traits and what’s offered and decide if it is a good match. Be sure to look at everything before you dive in.
